These consonant blend books are a great way for students to practice reading and sounding out words. These small interactive books work perfect at centers or as an individual activity. Blends are two or three consonants grouped together, with each letter keeping its own sound. Final n-blends are highly reliable. When the letters nd, nk, and nt appear together as a blend, they will almost always sound the same.
These blends most often appear in the final position within words, as in wind, ring, skunk, and tent. Final blend endings present a definite pronunciation challenge. Sometimes students only pronounce the last consonant in a blend, ignoring the others, resulting in a nonsense word ("dup" for "dump").
Other times, they sound out the blend slowly, saying the correct individual sounds, but not blending the ending into a smooth, fluent sound.
